Buying a House? Here’s How to Choose a Good Neighborhood

”What’s the neighborhood like?” is one of the most important questions to ask when contemplating buying a home. Selecting the area around your house is just as important as the house itself, and there are many good sources of information to steer you towards the right decision.

Ideally, your real estate agent should be your main source of reference. A good real estate agent will know the neighbourhood inside out and will be able to answer your questions about schools, parks, shopping, medical facilities, and transit routes. These are all factors that have a lot to do with determining just how happy you’ll be once you’ve settled into your new home.

Tips to Choose the Right Neighborhood for You

– Zoning maps: Check out the potential uses of land around you – this is especially important in new areas. You may think twice about buying across from a site zoned for commercial use, or want to choose a location close to a park or school site.
– Shopping and grocery stores: No one wants to drive more than a few minutes for bread or milk – even if you are willing to do that, the next buyer may not be.
– Commute: If you’re going to commute, what’s the maximum distance you are willing to drive? Get a map. Indicate those areas that are within range, and those that are too far out. It will help you limit your search area. Go for a drive during rush hour. Determine how long it gets you to get there.
– Good schools: Do your research and visit schools in the area and talk to principals and teachers to get a sense of their quality.
– Public facilities: Look for libraries, fire stations, police departments, hospitals, as well as malls and grocery stores – are they convenient and well located?
– Extras: Look for parks, wide streets, tall trees, schools and shopping centers.

My brother is currently looking for a home to buy. He’s not sure which neighborhood to look in, so he’s looking for advice. I didn’t realize that talking with local teachers and principals can give you a good idea of what kind of schools are in the area. I’ll be sure to share this tip with my brother.
